The Hillsborough Police Department has changed the focus of its fourth annual charity golf tournament to benefit the Orange Rural Fire Department in honor of the agency’s fallen firefighter.

“Considering recent tragic events, the proceeds from the #HillsboroughRocks Golf Tournament will go to the Orange Rural Fire Department in honor of Assistant Chief Jeffrey ‘Stan’ Holden,” said Sgt. William Parker of the Hillsborough Police Department. “Please support this effort by participating or making a donation. One town, one family.”

Holden died last week following a rescue while on duty at the Fire Department, which provides fire service for Hillsborough.

The Police Department’s golf tournament takes place at 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Shamrock Golf Course, 1722 Shamrock Drive in Burlington. The deadline for participating is next week — Aug. 31 — and registration is limited to 80 players.

The tournament will take place rain or shine with a shotgun start and will follow a four-player “captain’s choice” format. Teams can register for $50 per player, which includes cart rental, lunch and greens fee. For $5 each, players also can receive one mulligan (a second chance to perform an action) and one string (the ability to move the ball to a more advantageous spot).

Fees must be paid at the time of entry. Checks should be made payable to Town of Hillsborough, with #HillsboroughRocks Golf Tournament on the memo line.

Prizes will be awarded for 1st-, 2nd-, 3rd- and last-place teams and for the longest hole drive and the closest to the pin on a 3-par hole.

Businesses can sponsor holes on the course in exchange for donations, with a $100 minimum for a business logo sign and a $500 minimum for business banners. See the hole sponsorship form below.

For more information on the tournament or to register, contact the Hillsborough Police Department’s Community Services Unit by email or call Sgt. William Parker at 919-296-9542, Sgt. Nick Chelenza at 919-296-9552 or Senior Cpl. Tereasa Matthews at 919-296-9543.
