| With the threat of severe weather approaching our area this afternoon and evening, now is a good time to review what to do when storms hit. The link below takes you to our friends at the North Carolina Electric Cooperative site where you can find some great ideas to follow when preparing for storms in your area.

Our area has already experienced heavy rains within the past week so the ground is soft which can lead to falling trees. The addition of high winds makes the risk of downed trees worse so if your home is surrounded by trees, be vigilant for indications that those trees are weakened and have a potential to fall. If you become trapped by fallen trees, we will come get you so make sure you can call 911 and tell us where you are.
Remember, power lines and everything in contact with them will conduct electricity. Stay away from downed trees, and downed wires.
If you have a generator, make sure it's installed correctly so that it does not back feed the power grid. Back feeding the power grid will kill utility works, DOT and emergency response personnel trying to clear roads and rebuild power lines.
Do not drive through standing water. Ponding water can look like it's not moving but actually be fast flowing. It takes as little as six inches of water to float a vehicle and much less to cause hydroplaning of tires on moving vehicles. Slow down, turn around and don't drown.
If you experience an emergency, call 911. If your power goes out, call your utility provider. 911 cannot help report that your power is out.
For Duke Energy call 1-800- POWERON (769-3766) Fore Piedmont Electric call 1-800-222-3107
Fire, Law Enforcement and EMS will continue to respond to emergencies during storms unless conditions reach an unsafe level for response personnel. Increases in call volume may cause a delayed response for less critical (non life threatening) responses.
Today's storm is forecasted to last until after night fall so remain vigilant for problems and call the appropriate resource at first sign of any problems.
We are here if you need us but are hoping you don't. |
