At 0528 this morning, B-Shift responded to a reported structure fire in an abandoned building at the corner of South Churton Street and James Freeland Memorial Drive. This is the third response to this structure in recent months. Engine 231 arrived on scene within 4 minutes and crews located a small fire burning in the decorative mantel around the fire place. The crew quickly extinguished the fire and ventilated the structure. The fire was contained to the mantel and adjacent wall. No injuries were reported and the building was found to be vacant when crews completed a search for victims. Crews used thermal imagers to confirm no additional fire spread to the structure and applied encapsulating agents to prevent reignition. The cause of the response is believed to have been a warming fire that escaped the fireplace.
